Cubing Competitions Between Schools Should Happen

Here's why and how it could work

April 4th, 2023

As most of you reading this know, there are competitions between schools for all sorts of things. Sports, science, general academics, gaming, and much, much more. Yet, there aren't any really widespread cubing competitions/matches between schools. Here's why we should have them and how it could work.

In addition to this post I also talked about this on the WCA Forum, if you want to take a look at what I and others said on the topic here is the link to the forum post: https://forum.worldcubeassociation.org/t/competitions-between-schools/32984/57

Why we should do it:

Well cubing is a pretty solitary hobby for most people the majority of time spent cubing is spent alone. For some people maybe they might have a friend who cubes at school or they go to official WCA competitions every once in a while, but other than that they're cubing alone. If we were to have a competitions between schools, cubers in schools would be brought together and this would also probably facilitate more cubing clubs being formed.

The other reason why we should do this is just simply because it would simply be fun. For the competitors involved it would be a fun time going head to head against another school. These types of competitions could also be fun for non-cuber spectators. Depending on how a school competition/match is conducted, there might be spectators involved which would one, increase cubing's exposure to non-cubers, and two, it would up the stakes.

How would it work:

The format I thing would make the sense would be in a sort of relay. Like the one seen in North American Championships. This would add more of a team aspect to cubing. Each school would probably play around 3-5 matches during the regular season, then the best teams from the regular season would advance to the playoffs. As much as I wish these competitions could happen in person, currently it doesn't seam feasible just yet given that there might not be many schools nearby each other that all have cubers that want to take part in a competition/league like this. So at least at the start these competitions would probably happen online.

To finish off...

Competitions between schools is something I really want to make a reality. In fact I actually have started doing some work on this with a few other fellow cubers.
